perceptions of zen

So this is my first attempt at putting thoughts to paper or rather screen, and actually, in any fashion really. I have never been a diary keeper or journal writer. Frankly, I never really had anything to say. I realized that at some point and I decided it was to time to start reading what other people say or write and think is somehow valuable and decide for myself. Well, here is to getting started on a new voice.
I just watched Reign Over Me, directed by Mike Binder and starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. I got the Blu-Ray disc from Netflix. Its my second attempt at using the service, hope it works out better for me this time around; but I digress.
Reign Over Me is an amazing movie about mourning, survival and friendship. Adam Sandler impressed me with his ability to engage with a very limited amount of dialogue and the authentic portrayal of a father and husband in mourning. His character has had a life changing experience but is struggling to let go of his past. Don Cheadle plays a character struggling with his own issues of identity; he senses himself changing but isnt sure what needs to change. Utlimately, both characters find themselves trying to simply live in the present.
I think that most trouble and heartache comes from trying to be somewhere else. Its a bit of an oxymoron, I know. How can one be anywhere but here? We think we are in the present all the time or we dont realize we are trying to be elsewhere but often we are. And if we are doing something to be somewhere else, doesn’t the act of doing actually define us as being in the present. I think it does. Except, thats not how we percieve it. When we wish ourselves back to our childhood or ahead, with the visualisation of acomplishing our next goal, we dont perceive oursleves in the present…so we aren’t. And as we do this, we lose a little bit of ourselves in the process. Worst of all if we dont have an anchor to bring us back to the present whether it be an activity or a person, these projections forward or back can spiral and make it ever harder to hear our present voice again. Thats a scary thought.
I am thankful for movies like Reign Over Me. That is just the reality I perceived tonight after watching this great movie and an attmept to capture first thoughts to screen.
